My 1983 GMC S15 Low Rider Truck Project
Wow…. Where do I even begin, and why am I even wanting to do this? I know why! Because my low rider was a direct representation of me, and it allowed me (at the time) to come out from my shell and become more sociable.
In 1991 I bought a used 1983 GMC S15 from a guy in my hometown for $1600.00. The body and interior was in pretty good shape, but as you can see it was a nice tan color with a long green splash sticker along the side. It had matching green hubcaps at the time, but I later changed those for a set of chrome Cragar wheels as you can see.
I had my truck for about 2 years before I sold it for $3500.00. Man, I really didn’t want to let it go, but I was 21 years old and needed the money. I’m now 45 years old, soon to be 46 and I really have this strong desire to build me a truck that was identical to the one I had.
Once I established that I was going to do this and see it through (i.e. Had my wife’s blessing), and before I started my search for a 1982, 1983, 1984, or 1985 GMC S15 I wanted to see if I could find my old one first. After making several calls to the family that bought my old mini truck, I finally found out that they had sold the truck a few years earlier to someone they only knew as Scott. They didn’t have a name or address, but did mention it was pretty much a rust bucket. Honestly, that didn’t matter to me because I felt I could just have it restored. But after a few more years of searching after learning they no longer had it, and just short of hiring a private investigator to find it (no joke), I decided to just search for another truck as closely identical to what I had.
It’s now August 2017. Lets see how far we can take this shall we….. (stay tuned)
